Chapter Twelve

I sat on the edge of the small clearing that Luke and Liz were sparring in. The treetops rustled overhead from the gentle summer breeze. It had been several days since my dream, and we were in a national park somewhere near the edge of Missouri. Travel was slow progress as we spent the majority of our days in various wooded areas, practicing our fighting skills.

Liz was learning quickly, already showing signs of progress as she darted in and out of Luke’s reach. She finally landed a blow on his shoulder that made him pause.

“All right, that’s enough for today.”

“What you can’t handle it?” Liz hopped back and forth in front of him, her arms raised in a boxer’s stance.

“Give him a break!” I laughed from the sidelines. “You guys have been going at it for hours.”

Liz sauntered over to me “And yet, I’m not the one breaking a sweat. All my years of dance training have paid off.”

I glanced at Luke – she was right. Whereas Luke seemed to be slightly out of breath, Liz was strutting around like she hadn’t been practicing self-defense all morning.

Liz yelled over to Luke. “I can teach you some dance if you want to improve your stamina.”

Luke glared daggers at her and stalked over to rest against a rock on the other side of the clearing.

“Don’t antagonize him, he might change his mind about teaching you.”

“No, he won’t.” She said confidently. “He’s a softy deep down, I can tell.”

“You seem to be able to tell a lot of things.” I thought out loud.

Liz plonked down next to me, her eyes wide. “Don’t tell me, you’ve finally admitted that I was right about the raw animal attraction between you two?”

I fiddled with a few of the grass blades in front of me, avoiding her gaze. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to answer or not.

“Well, it may have been a little bit correct. It’s not a big deal though. I’ll get over it.”

“I knew it!” Liz squealed. She clapped her hands together in front of her mouth. “I mean, he is hard to resist, isn’t he? Look at all that muscle and angst.”

We both turned to Luke at the same time to see him staring back at us intently. Quickly, he adverted his gaze up while I brought mine back down to the ground.

“I hope he can’t hear us from over here,” I mumbled to Liz.

“There’s no way.” She laid down on the grass, gazing up at the vividly blue sky. “What a week this has been. If I’d known on Monday that come the weekend, I would be a fugitive heading to battle an evil Immortal, I would’ve packed better.”

I let out a snort. “Are clothes all you ever think about?”

“Clothes and money.” She pulled her wallet out of her shorts and opened it. “Speaking of which, we’re starting to run low. What should we do?”

“Maybe we can stay at the campsite near here. We might not even have to pay if we can sneak in.
